City Year is a national organization that believes in making a difference in the life of a community through citizen service.  Participants in this City Year service experience will tutor and mentor children, reclaim public spaces, and/or organize after-school programs.  As a group, we will discuss the connection between social justice and poverty and address key social issues such as poverty and education. Amanda Gross, UNC-CH's Engagement Associate, is thrilled to staff this experience and share from her years as an Avodah Corp member and an AmeriCorps VISTA.  UNC students will be joined by Hillel at Binghamton, Hillel of Broward and Palm Beach, Rutgers University Hillel Foundation, Princeton Hillel - Center for Jewish Life, University of Delaware Hillel, Johns Hopkins Hillel, Hillel of Rochester Area Colleges and Syracuse University Hillel for this week-long experience.

This program is a product of Hillel's Alternative Break partnership with City Year, which has also established a relationship with Alpha Epsilon Pi.  For more information, email agross@nchillel.org.

If you are interested in exploring the connections between Judaism and social justice and finding your own Jewish voice in that conversation, this experience is not to be missed.  Join Michelle Brownstein Horowitz, North Carolina Hillel's Assistant Director, in this highly selective, year-long program.  Address key issues and wrestle with your values during six fall semester sessions.  Participate in this highly subsidized, international service trip through the American Jewish World Service in the spring, then come back to campus and share what you've learned with others!  This experience is open to UNC-Chapel Hill students who have an interest in learning about social justice, doing direct service work and making an impact at UNC and beyond.  At the end of the year, you will receive your Tzedek (Justice) Certificate.

About the trip: The American Jewish World Service partners with grassroots community-based organizations to promote social change in the developing world.  Participants will build collaborative relationships with NGOs and draw on Judaism’s religious and cultural traditions to explore the responsibility to pursue global justice.

For more information, email mbhorowitz@nchillel.org.  More details to come soon.
