The Rashi Fellowship is named for the great commentator Rashi (an acronym for Rabbi Shlomo ben Yitzchak). He was born in Troyes, France in the eleventh century, and was educated in Germany. Most Jews consider Rashi the greatest commentator on the Torah as well as on the Talmud, and he is studied universally in both areas by experts and beginners alike. As Rashi lived in a small Jewish community (around 200 Jews) and did great things for the Jewish people, the NC Hillel Rashi Fellows have a profound influence on their campuses.

Description of Responsibilities
The Fellowship is a year-long opportunity to gain valuable leadership experience while working to enhance Jewish life on campus. Fellows will participate in leadership training retreats, support elected members of the Hillel or Jewish Student Organization board to strengthen and improve programming and publicity, and develop relationships with key campus and community players.
Duties of Rashi Fellows will include:

Publicity – tabling, promoting programs, posting flyers, ensuring the maintenance of the campus Hillel website
- Administration – maintaining and updating student lists, email contacts
- Relationship-building – networking with campus ministry, student government, student activities, and other campus officials; meeting with local Jewish community members
- Personal development – enrichment and training programs for Fellows, supervision with Director of Statewide Programs
- Programming responsibilities – assisting the student board in developing and executing successful programs
Specifically, Rashi Fellows will be responsible for creating educational/engaging tables, developing programming for uninvolved Jewish students, and serve as a resource to link Jewish students to existing Hillel programs. Rashi Fellows have weekly assignments for approximately 10-12 weeks of each semester, with flexibility around Fall and Spring Breaks as well as exams.
Rashi Fellows are required to attend occasional training sessions and participate in conference calls.
Additional Information
All applications for the Rashi Fellowship must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation from a university official in addition to the name of at least one peer who will serve as a reference. These may be faxed, mailed, or emailed to Geoff Brown, Director of Statewide Programs.
Rashi Fellows may not serve as President, VP, or Secretary of their campus Hillel/JSO student board, unless by special arrangement.
Fellows will receive a $1000 stipend for the school year over two semesters, contingent upon completion and reporting of assigned responsibilities.
